9 Survival Skills Our Great-Grandparents Knew

Our modern society is highly dependent upon we’ll call the “system.” Not only do we rely upon utility services to bring us electricity, water and natural gas, but also on an incredibly complex supply chain which provides us with everything from food to computers. Without that supply chain, most of us wouldn’t know what to do. This situation is actually becoming worse, rather than better. When I compare my generation (I’m in my 50s) to that of my children, I see some striking differences. In my generation it was normal for a boy to grow up learning how to do a wide variety of trade skills from his father, and seemingly everyone knew how to do basic carpentry and mechanic work. But that’s no longer normal. If we extrapolate it back, we can see that my father’s generation knew even mor...

Medicine in Your Backyard

Since moving to the country and working toward self-sufficiency, I find myself paying a lot more attention to what’s coming out of the ground. I walk around taking pictures of plants on my phone, so I can look them up online and find out what they are and, more importantly, what use they may have, either nutritionally or medicinally – or both. Plants I had always thought were weeds or just wildflowers I have since found actually have wonderful medicinal uses. Sadly, much of this information has been lost through the generations as young people are more interested in the latest social media craze than what the old folks could teach them. Unless you still have your great-grandmother, who grew up in the mountains and was the local source for home remedies, or your great-grandfather was the me...

Survival Skill : How To Collect Birch Sap

This is how to collect birch sap from your own birch trees as a beverage for a Survival. During the summer, the birch tree stores nourishment for the next period of growth in its roots. The following spring, this nourishment rises as sap through the trunk up to the branches. The birch tree emits sap only for a short period of time (about four weeks) during spring. That period starts when the snow has melted away and the day-temperature reaches some degrees above freezing point. The rise of the sap stops immediately when the tree comes into leaf. During sap-rising, a big old birch can give 15-20 litres per day, but this requires a tapping-hole of 5 cm diameter and 10 cm depth. The birch will endure such treatment only once, maybe twice in its lifetime. To be more careful with the tree, perh...

Survival Skill: How To Hot Wire A Car

Today, we’ve written an article for educational and legal purposes only. Perhaps you’ve lost your keys and you need to get your car going in an emergency situation. We don’t promote the use of anything we teach on Doomsday News for illegal purposes. Ok, so that’s enough of the formalities. Let’s get started. Before you remove the ignition cover, try using a screwdriver in the ignition. This may work really well depending on the car and prevent you from having to remove the ignition cover. However if this doesn’t work, you can use the screwdriver to hot wire the car. 1. Carefully remove the steering case &  ignition cover until the cylinder and wires are exposed.Be careful because you could shock yourself. Also, you will want to be able to close it so you can use it later. 2.Determine w...

Survival Can You Eat Dog Food ?

In our current comfy, technology-ridden lives we rarely have a reason to sacrifice our comforts, but what if the world was a much different place?  What if your own city wasn’t a city, but a wasteland?  And what if, in a matter of hours, you went from comfortable and sustained, to simply needing to survive?  Have you ever wondered about the limits of human sustenance, or the bare minimum you need to survive?  Let’s go over a few strange things you could, in a pinch, eat for to stay alive. Dog Food:  Gross, right?  Yeah, it is, but it might be what you need to sustain you for a short while.  There are a couple drawbacks, however.  Namely, humans are omnivores whereas dogs are carnivores.  Carnivores can survive exclusively off of a meat based diet (like dog food) whereas humans would experi...

Instructions to Make a Snare Trap

When it comes to outdoor survival, eating is one of your last concerns.  Humans can go up to 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water and just a few hours without shelter in extreme weather conditions! With that said, I like to eat! Having a source of food in outdoor survival situations will make all of the other aspects a lot easier. A lot of people like to imagine that they will be eating large game when surviving in the wilderness. The truth is that you probably won’t be eating a big buck or moose but probably eating insects for survival or forage wild edibles. However, trapping and snaring animals can be great for getting survival food. Not only are small game tastier than roasted crickets, but the physical act of making and setting the animal traps or snares will als...
